Previously, I introduced the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
As mentioned, they debuted in a comic book in 1984.
However, it wasn't until 1987 with the start of their cartoon series that they really hit mainstream success.
Today, I want to talk about the cartoon series that propelled them into American pop culture.

With the surprise success of the Ninja Turtles comic book series Eastman and Laird licensed the characters to Playmates Toys, which developed a line of Ninja Turtles action figures.
To coincide with the new toy line, an animated cartoon was produced by Fred Wolf Films.
Although based on the comic book series, the cartoon was significantly toned down in violence and attitude.
The comic book was known for its violent storytelling and gritty atmosphere, but the cartoon was aimed at small children and families.

Afterwards, the show began on October 1st, 1988 and concluded with its 10th season on November 2nd 1996.
During the shows run it became one of the most popular cartoons in television history.
The toy sales topped $1.1 billion between 1988 and 1992.
They became the third-bestselling toy figures ever at the time.

Of course I would play with the toys as well.
My mother even made me a Ninja Turtles costume for Halloween one year.
It's hard to describe just how popular the series was in America during the late 1980's and early 1990's.
I can still remember the opening theme song and feeling so excited to watch it on TV.
