今日は映画『ティーンエイジ・ミュータント・ニンジャ・タートルズ』についてお話します！

Besides the animated series Ninja Turtles exploded in popularity with a movie!
Today, we will talk about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film!

1984 年にコミック シリーズが始まり、1987 年にアニメ シリーズと玩具シリーズが始まりました。
毎年、ニーナ タートルのブームはますます大きくなっていきました。

As stated before, the Ninja Turtles had become a phenomenon in America.
The comic book series started things off in 1984 with the animated series and toy line beginning in 1987.
Each year Nina Turtle craze kept growing and growing.
Ninja Turtles were on every marketable thing available, including a line of breakfast cereal!
By 1990 Ninja Turtle mayhem had reached a fever pitch and it was the perfect time to release the Ninja Turtles film!
この映画は1989年にノースカロライナ州とニューヨーク州で撮影が開始された。
カメに命を吹き込むために、ジム・ヘンソンがそれぞれのカメの衣装をデザインするよう依頼されました。

The film began filming in 1989 in North Carolina and New York.
To bring the turtles to life, Jim Henson was called in to design costumes for each of the turtles.
Jim Henson said that the Ninja Turtles costumes were the most advanced that he had ever worked with.
They were first made out of fiberglass and then remolded out of clay.
Despite their advanced features, it was sweltering for the actors to wear.
この映画の脚本は主に原作のコミックシリーズに基づいていますが、人気のアニメシリーズの要素も取り入れています。
漫画をベースにしているため、よりザラザラした雰囲気はありますが、アニメシリーズで導入された色のバンダナやカメのピザ好きは映画にも引き継がれました。
The script for the film was based mostly on the original comic book series but also took elements from the popular animated series.
Due to being based on the comic book it does have a grittier feel but the colored bandanas, which were introduced in the animated series were carried over for the film, as well as the turtle's love of pizza.
この映画は1990年3月30日にニュー・ライン・シネマによって劇場公開された。
当時の大手スタジオの多くは、アニメシリーズと玩具シリーズが大成功を収めたにもかかわらず、本作が失敗に終わることを恐れて映画の配給を見送った。

The film was released theatrically on March 30th, 1990 by New Line Cinema.
Many of the major studios at the time passed on distributing the film fearing it would be a flop despite the massive success of the animated series and toy line.
New Line Cinema's gamble paid off as the movie grossed over $202 million on a budget of $13.5 million.
Critics gave the film mixed reviews but audiences loved it!
The year prior, Batman was released in theaters to massive success and Ninja Turtles followed suit.
It was the highest-grossing independent film at that time.

私はニンジャ・タートルズが大好きでしたが、映画はそれほど好きではなかったのを覚えています。
私にとって、それは少し怖くて、あまりにも現実的でした。

Of course, I saw the movie as a kid.
Although I loved Ninja Turtles I remember not liking the movie so much.
For me, it was a little scary and too real.
I was only 3 years old at the time of the release but I preferred the softer and happier animated cartoon.
Do you remember seeing the Ninja Turtles movie in Japan?
