On my way back to Japan from America I watched a movie on the plane.
It was about 4 anthropomorphic turtles with ninja abilities.
Have you ever heard of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
This was a cartoon that I loved as a kid!
Today, lets talk about it!
ティーンエイジ ミュータント ニンジャ タートルズ (TMNT) は、1984 年にケビン イーストマンとピーター レアードによって制作されました。
TMNT のコンセプトは冗談から始まりました。
初期のインスピレーションは、当時人気のあったスーパーヒーロー コミックから得られました。
インスピレーションは、マーベルのデアデビル、X-MEN、ハワード・ザ・ダックのコミックや、DC のティーン・タイタンズから来ました。
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) was created in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
The concept for TMNT began as a joke.
Early inspiration was taken from popular superhero comics at the time.
Inspirations came from Marvel's Daredevil, X-Men, and Howard the Duck comics as well as DC's Teen Titans.
このシリーズは、レアードとイーストマンの会社、ミラージュ スタジオを通じて自費出版のコミック本としてデビューしました。
二人とも驚いたことに、この本はすぐに成功を収めました。
3,000部のオリジナル版は2週間以内に完売しました。
The series debuted as a self-published comic book through Laird and Eastman's company, Mirage Studios.
The book, to both their surprise, quickly found success.
Their original run of 3000 copies sold out within two weeks.

The main character's of Ninja Turtles consist of four anthropomorphic turtles who were trained in ninjitsu.
The leader, often wearing a blue bandana, is named Leonardo.
His weapons of choice are two katanas.

Next is the Raphael, who is often second in command and physically the strongest of the four.

Third is Donatello who is the most intelligent and tech savvy of the four.

Finally there is Michelangelo who is usually depicted as the most fun-loving turtle.
Michelangelo is the fastest of the four and uses two nunchucks.
His bandana color is orange.

Originally the creators wanted to name the turtles using Japanese names but but changed to famous Italian Renaissance artists.
They felt this change would help the turtles stick out more.

The turtles are supported by their teacher and surrogate father, Splinter.

The franchise would soon be licensed out to a toy manufacturing company and in 1987 an animated series aimed towards kids would be produced.
The animated series would skyrocket the turtles into mainstream success and kickoff the franchise into what it has become now.
However, that story will have to wait.

As a kid, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was one of my favorite things.
Although I grew out of it as I got older I will always have a fondness for it in my heart.
