I'd like to introduce a special TV program to you today!
It was something that I used to watch as a kid.
It was unlike any of the other tv programs of its time.
Today, let's take a look at the clay hero, Gumby!
ガンビーの起源は 1950 年代にまで遡り、2 つのテレビ シリーズ、映画、さまざまな出版デビューを果たしました。
Art Clokey によって作成されたガンビーは、粘土を使った彼の 3 分間の短い実験映画「Gumbasia」にインスピレーションを受けて制作されました。
この映画は、ジャズ音楽に合わせて粘土の塊が動き、膨張し、さまざまな形に変形するディズニーのファンタジアへのオマージュでした。
With origins dating back to the 1950s, Gumby has enjoyed two TV series, a movie, and various publication debuts.
Created by Art Clokey, Gumby was inspired by his 3-minute short experimental film using clay titled "Gumbasia".
The film was a homage to Disney's Fantasia, where lumps of clay would move, expand, and morph into various shapes set to jazz music.
サム・エンゲルという名前によって製作された映画がこの短編映画に注目しました。
エンゲルはクローキーにキャラクターを追加し、子供向けに開発するよう勧めました。
エンゲルもプロジェクトに資金を提供し、最初のパイロット エピソードが作成されました。
A film produced by the name of Sam Engel took notice of the short film.
Engel encouraged Clokey to add characters and develop them for children.
Engel also funded the project, and the first pilot episode was created.
好評を博したため、パイロット エピソードはハウディ ドゥーディ ショーで放映され、子供たちの間でさらに大きなヒットとなりました。
これにより、NBC は 25 エピソードの本格的なシリーズを発注することになりました。

Having been well received, the pilot episodes were aired on the Howdy Doody show only to become a bigger hit with kids.
This prompted NBC to order a full-fledged series of 25 episodes.
The show was called "The Gumby Show" and ran from 1957 to 1969 in syndication.
「ガンビー」という名前は、クロキーの祖父母の家に由来しており、そこでは彼らが「ガンボ」と呼んでいた泥状の粘土が見つかりました。

The name "Gumby" comes from Clokey's grandparent's house, where a muddy clay could be found, which they called "gumbo".
Gumby's green appearance was chosen because it was deemed racially neutral as well as green symbolizing life.
Gumby's wide feet are to ensure that he will stand firmly during filming.
His slanted head was inspired by Clokey's father's hairstyle from old pictures.

In 1988 the Gumby television show was revived entering syndication with 99 new episodes.
The show was called "Gumby Adventures" and introduced some new characters along with a new setting.

Unfortunately, it bombed at the box offices and no new Gumby productions have been created since.
The film is considered to be pretty bad, but it sold well on VHS and has since become a cult-classic film.
Interestingly though, Namco created a Gumby game in 2005 for the Nintendo Advance.
2022 年 2 月以降、フォックス・コーポレーションはガンビーの知的財産の権利を購入しました。

Since February 2022, Fox Entertainment has purchased the rights to the Gumby intellectual property.
They have announced plans to revive the franchise as well as stream all previously created media.
