トゥナミ：アニメ侵略

前回のエントリーで始めた会話を続けたいと思います。
トゥナミについて簡単に話しましたが、詳細に入る機会がありませんでした。
アニメの文化的認識を広めるのを助けるトゥナミの重要性は、米国で非常に大きかった。
I would like to continue the conversation that we started in the previous entry.
I talked briefly about Toonami, but didn't have a chance to go into more detail.
Toonami's significance in helping spread cultural awareness of anime was massive in the United States.

The programming block was started in 1997 with the primary goal of hosting action oriented animated programs.
The original incarnation was hosted by a character named Moltar.
Moltar was a villain in the 1966 cartoon titled Space Ghost.
Over the years, Space Ghost characters have been used in comical ways, such as being the host of a talk show or being the producer of Toonami.

1999 is when Toonami began to be transformed into the cultural icon that it became.
Moltar was replaced with a robot host named T.O.M.
The setting in which T.O.M. resides was also changed from where Moltar was.
It now took place in space on a spaceship.
Everything was rendered using CG graphics.
This era of Toonami introduced anime as its centerpiece.
Dragonball Z was the most popular show at the time, but also featured Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, The Big O, Outlaw Star, and more.
Between episodes music videos would be broadcasted, most notable being those from Interstellar 5555, the collaboration between Daft Punk and Reiji Matsumoto.
Finally, in September of 2000 a special event took place between episodes featuring T.O.M. fighting against an alien intruder.
T.O.M. was ultimately destroyed by the alien invader, which brought this era of Toonami to a close.

The next iteration was kicked off with T.O.M. 2.
T.O.M. was upgraded into a new model by his AI matrix named S.A.R.A.
Between programming T.O.M. would talk to viewers and introduce news on upcoming shows.
Many of the intermissions also featured a drum and bass soundtrack which added to its space themed appeal.
Dragonball continued to prove very popular along with other shows like Ruroni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Macross, and more.
A giant robot themed event also took place intruducing shows like Evengelion.

From 2003, T.O.M. is again upgraded into a more muscular version, and begins the next era of Toonami.
During this time, Toonami partnered with Production I.G to produce a short anime miniseries called Immortal Grand Prix.
It also began it's next wave of new anime programs including Naruto, One Piece, Gundam SEED, Rave Masters, and more.
Mixed in was also western animation from DC comics as well as original Cartoon Network productions.

The programming block would be canceled after 11 years of broadcasting due to declining viewership.

Now, this is where things get complicated.
In 2012, another late night programming block had taken over.
It was known as Adult Swim, and focused on adult oriented animated programming.
Every year, on April 1st, they broadcast a special movie called The Room as an April Fools prank.
The Room is known as one of the best worst movies ever made.
In fact, it deserves it's own blog post.
Instead of The Room, they broadcasted various shows made popular by Toonami, using T.O.M. as the host.
When the airing concluded for the evening, they urged people to go to Twitter, and express if they would be interested in seeing Toonami return.
After the resounding success, Toonami began broadcasting again from May with shows like Bleach, Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, Soul Eater, and more.
トゥナミは本格的に復活し、2013 年から新しい外観になりました。

T.O.M. was changed again (his 5th change) along with the overall visual appearance of its presentation.
In 2014 Toonami premiered the anime Space Dandy to big success.
Samurai Jack, a popular Cartoon Network animated series was announced to be getting a conclusion to its series which would appear on Toonami in 2017.
In 2018, partnering again with Production I.G premiered two new FLCL series, which was a very popular anime in America.
In 2019, Demon Slayer would begin airing in America alongside Dr. Stone.

Toonami seems to be alive and well for the younger generation to enjoy and be introduced into anime.
トゥナミはもう10年以上観ていませんが、世界中の多くの人に楽しんでもらえると嬉しいです。
トゥナミ以前、アメリカのアニメは非常にニッチで、比較的知られていないものだったとは考えにくい。
まだまだ知名度の低い時代を懐かしく思うこともありますが、今では多くの方に楽しんでいただけると思います。
トゥナミは、子供の頃に経験した本当に素晴らしいものであり、世界の大部分にアニメをもたらしました。
I haven't watched Toonami in over 10 years, but I'm happy many people across the world can enjoy it.
Its hard to think that before Toonami, Anime in America was a very niche and relatively unknown thing.
Sometimes I miss the days of it being lesser known, but I'm happy to think that many people can enjoy it now.
Toonami was really an amazing thing to experience as a kid, and it brought anime to a large part of the world.
