The days are getting longer and hotter.
In Japan, what is one of the most ubiquitous foods of the season?
Of course, it's shaved ice (かき氷)!
Did you know Italy also has its version of shaved ice?
Today, let's talk about Italian ice!
アメリカでイタリアの氷について話すとき、それは 20 世紀初頭にイタリア移民によってこの国にもたらされた砂漠を指します。
この氷のおやつは、グラニータと呼ばれるシチリアのデザートに由来しています。
When talking about Italian ice in America it's referring to a desert that was brought to the country by Italian immigrants in the early 20th century.
The icy treat was derived from the Sicilian dessert called granita.
イタリアンアイスは半凍った氷のお菓子で、粘稠度が異なります。
多くの場合、顆粒氷とフルーツ濃縮物、ジュース、ピューレから作られます。
アイスクリームの作り方と同じように、材料を混ぜ合わせて泡立てます。
カリカリ、滑らか、またはどろどろの形でお召し上がりいただけます。
Italian ice is a semi-frozen ice treat that can vary in consistency.
Often it will be made from granulated ice and fruit concentrates, juices, and purées.
The ingredients are mixed and then whipped, similar to how ice cream is made.
It will be served in a crunchy, smooth, or slushy form.
イタリアンアイスは、デラウェア州北部やジャージー州南部を含むフィラデルフィア地域で人気になりました。
これらの地域では、それは「ウォーターアイス」というあだ名で知られるようになりました。

Italian ice became popular in the Philadelphia area including northern Delaware and South Jersey.
In these areas, it became known under the moniker of "water ice".
Water ice and Italian ice are virtually the same and the name is just a regional difference.
The frozen treat goes on sale from late spring and into the hot months of summer.

Since my family is from Philadelphia I have vague memories of trying this desert as a kid.
I didn't particularly like icy treats like this, and even now don't care for shaved ice.
I do remember visiting a small Italian ice shop with my father in Florida while driving around in his work truck.
He would order a lemon-flavored Italian ice and a soft pretzel, which was a popular snack in Philadelphia.
