最も単純なゲームの中には、最も奥深い戦略を持つものもあります。
例えば、じゃんけんは単純ですが、それが完璧なのです。
今日は、アメリカのゲームを紹介したいと思います。
サークルゲームと呼ばれています。

Throughout history, humans have found ways to play games with each other.
Some games can be complex while others simple.
Some of the simplest games can have the deepest strategy.
Rock, scissors, paper for example is simple, but that's what makes it perfect.
Today, I'd like to introduce to you a game from America.
It's called the circle game.
You better not look!
ではまず、サークルゲームとは何かについてお話ししましょう。
ルールは簡単です。
1人が人差し指と親指を使って円を描きます。
次に、もう1人にその円を見てもらいます。
ただし、円は腰の高さから下にしか描けません。
もう1人が円を見たら、円を描いた人は、見ている人の腕を（乱暴ではなく、遊び心で）殴ることができます。
以上です。

So first, let's talk about what the circle game is.
The rules are simple.
One person makes a circle using their index finger and thumb.
Then they try to get another person to look at the circle.
However, the circle can only be from waist level and below.
If the other person sees the circle, the person who made the circle is then allowed to punch (in a playful way, not violently) the looker in the arm.
That is it.
Yes, it's silly, but at the end of the day, we are simple creatures that just want to enjoy simple fun.

So, now the tricky part is where did the game originate?
For a while, nobody knew the origins of the circle game.
However, a reporter from Vice magazine set out to find an answer.
After a lot of sleuthing it was discovered through old internet archives that the circle game was claimed to be invested by a man in New Bremen, Ohio.
The man's name is Matt Nelson and he claims to have invented the game in the early 1980s.
The reporter was overwhelmed with joy having solved one of the mysteries of the world.
However, a few days after the article was published on the internet, many people came forward to refute the claims of Matt Nelson.
Many have said they were playing the circle game in the 70s and perhaps even earlier.
So, like with many other things, it's impossible to ever know the true origin.
一つだけわかっているのは、サークルゲームはシンプルで楽しいもので、最近インターネットのおかげで再び人気が高まっているということです。
インターネットが登場する前から、アメリカのコメディ番組「マルコム・イン・ザ・ミドル」で復活していました。
あるエピソードで、2人の兄弟がゲームをしてお互いを殴り合いますが、相手を傷つけることになります。
やがて、障害のある友人もゲームをしたいと言い出し、状況は耐え難いものになります。

The one thing that we do know is that the circle game is simple, and fun, and recently become quite popular again due to the internet.
Even before the internet it was making a comeback through an American sitcom called Malcolm in the Middle.
It was featured in an episode where two brothers would play the game and punch each other, but to cause harm.
Eventually, their disabled friend wants to play and the situation becomes unbearable.
I won't spoil the ending though, so you'll have to watch it for yourself.
