For me, and many other Americans, we will always remember the day of September 11th, 2001.

It was a normal Tuesday morning.
I was a freshman in high school, and it was during second-period gym class that we heard an announcement.
The principal came on the loudspeaker and told us that there was an attack in New York City.
Everything stopped.
All the students and teachers gathered around a small TV to watch the news.
Time had become irrelevant.
Classes were canceled.
Everyone just watched the TV as the attacks unfolded.
Nobody knew what was going on.
Nobody could provide answers.
It was one of the most surreal feelings I had ever experienced.

Eventually, all students returned to their homerooms and we continued to watch the news.
Classes were canceled for the rest of the day and we all sat in silence.

The days after the attack were just as confusing.

Many Americans felt fear and anger.
There was anger towards the Middle East as many people demanded retaliation.

Not understanding what this entailed, but wanting to vent their anger, many Americans agreed with this decision.
The war would last for almost 20 years.

I have many conflicting feelings about the decisions made by the American government, but there is one thing I'm sure of, 2001 changed America forever.

The first impact was into the North Tower at 8:46 a.m.
16 minutes later, the second plane struck the South Tower at 9:02 a.m.
Within an hour and forty minutes, both skyscrapers had fallen bringing about the destruction of the rest of the World Trade Center area and damaging surrounding buildings.

The fourth plane was heading toward the United States capital, Washington D.C., but was thwarted by a passenger revolt, forcing the terrorist to crash the plane in rural Pennsylvania at 10:03 a.m.

Eventually, life had gone back to normal, but the atmosphere in America was irrevocably changed forever.
Security became a focal point and many of the American freedoms we enjoyed were sacrificed in the same of national security.
Many of the policies we have in airports today are due to the September 11th attacks.

Issues like global warming, energy, famine, drought, and territory disputes.
過去の出来事を決して忘れず、それを活かして平和でより良い明日に向かって進んでいきましょう！
Let's never forget the events of our past, and use them to move forward towards a peaceful and better tomorrow!
