You might not be familiar with his name, but you've surely heard his music.
Today I want to introduce a song he wrote about Russian Prime Minister Putin.

Since we talked about the movie The Death of Stalin previously, I thought it would be fitting to follow it up with this song about Putin.

Randy Newman is an American singer, songwriter, and composer.
This year will mark his 80th birthday, but he has been creating music since the 1960s.
Most people have heard many of his compositions before, as he has worked on numerous popular movies like Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., and Cars.
The song ‘You’ve Got A Friend in Me’ from Toy Story boosted his popularity into the mainstream.
2017年、ニューマンは15枚目のスタジオアルバム「ダークマター」をリリースした。

In 2017, Newman released his 15th studio album titled "Dark Matter".
On the album was a song, simply titled "Putin".
The song is a satirical attack on the Russian Prime Minister.
It was a direct response to pictures of Putin, without his shirt on, flooding the internet at the time.

Newman explained that he wrote the song when “all those pictures were appearing of him with his shirt off, and I couldn’t understand why. What did he want? I think it was just personal vanity of some kind like he wanted to be Tom Cruise. It wasn’t enough to be the richest and most powerful. He wanted to be the most handsome and a superhero, throwing young people around and wrestling.”

He said that Putin is a villain, and he's aware that the lyrics should be more critical, but decided against it.

But I was conscious of it being too easy. It's like writing an anti-war song that goes, "War is bad." Well yeah, of course it is!"

Newman says he also wrote a song about Trump but decided against releasing it due to the tension around the issue in America.

The album as a whole was placed in many top albums of the year lists for 2017.
