When a picture, video, or story spreads quickly on the internet we call it going "viral".
When a picture or video becomes so popular and is used as a joke online, this is called a "meme".

Back in the early 2000s SNS didn't exist.
Most people spread jokes through message boards or forums.

A Japanese game called "Zero Wing" was brought to Europe in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive.
The game was poorly translated, and a special line of dialogue became the center of an internet joke.
