アメリカには独自の文化はなく、他の文化の集合体だと思っていました。
アメリカを離れて初めて、アメリカとは何かを本当に理解し始めました。
時には一歩下がって、別の角度から物事を見て理解する必要があります。
アメリカは広大な国で、多くの地域が独自の文化的アイデンティティを持っています。
今日は、古き良きカントリーミュージックを皆さんに紹介したいと思います。

I remember a time in high school when I used to question what American culture was.
My thought was that America didn't have a culture of its own and was a conglomeration of other cultures.
It was only after moving away from America that I truly started to understand what America is.
Sometimes you need to step back and see something from a different angle to understand it.
America is a vast country with many regions containing their own cultural identity.
Today, I'm going to share with you some good old-fashioned country music.
Things don't get much more American than this.

Alan Jackson is an American country music singer and songwriter who has recorded 21 albums to date.
In May 1993 he released the third single, "Chattahoochee," which would appear on his 3rd studio album, A Lot About Livin' (And a Little 'bout Love).
The song would go on to become one of Jackson's most recognized and beloved hits.

The song was a collaborative project with fellow country songwriter Jim McBride.
Jackson and McBride wanted to create something that was more up-tempo than their other works.
When McBride pitched the line 'way down yonder on the Chattahoochee,' they knew they had found what they wanted, and everything began to fall into place.
Soon, they had a song about having fun, growing up, and coming of age in a small town along the Chattahoochee River.

I'd imagine many readers aren't familiar with the Chattahoochee River, but it flows from northern Georgia and forms part of the borders that Georgia shares with Alabama and Florida.
この曲は二人の期待を上回り、これほどヒットするとは思ってもいなかった。
この曲はチャタフーチー川を題材にしているが、その根底にあるのは、チャタフーチー川の人々だけでなく、全国の誰にでも当てはまる青春時代の無邪気さを振り返ることだ。

Although the song highlights the Chattahoochee River, at its core it's a look back on the innocence of adolescence that can apply to anyone across the country, not just by the Chattahoochee.
Due to this wide appeal, it topped the US Hot Country Songs at #1 and peaked at #46 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song was also notable for its music video, which showed Jackson water-skiing in his red cowboy boots and red life vest.

今では、そんなことは問題ではなく、私は自分が否定していた素晴らしい音楽をたくさん楽しんでいます。
この音楽の中には、アメリカ南部の文化と精神が感じられます。
日本の演歌と比較できるのではないかと時々思います。

As a kid, country music was very divisive.
To like country music was to portray the image of a country bumpkin.
There was a strong stigma attached to it, and as such I avoided it like the plague.
Every once in a while a song would be so good that it would transcend those stereotypes and hit the mainstream, but for the most part, country music remained a genre of music for only a certain type of people.
Nowadays, none of that matters, and I find myself enjoying so much great music I had denied myself.
Within this music you can find the culture and spirit of the American South.
Sometimes I wonder if it can be compared to Japanese enka music.
Let's enjoy this style of music together!
