The spirit of Christmas is alive in many forms.
Some say it comes in the delicate, freshly laid snow or the lights and sounds of the Christmas season.
Others say that the Christmas spirit is within us and shines when we show compassion and goodwill towards each other.
All of those may be true, but the Christmas spirit is also in a 40-story skyscraper with one cop on a mission to stop a terrorist.

Die Hard is a 1988 action film based on the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp.
Despite the film's Christmas Eve setting, it was created as a summer blockbuster and was released on July 15th.
Many believed that the film would be a failure, and as such, many of the big stars of the time turned down the role for the main character.
As we all know, the film went on to become a box office success, returning about $140 million on a $30 million budget.

Work on Die Hard began in 1987 when Jeb Stuart was tasked with adapting the novel Nothing Lasts Forever.
At the time, Stuart was struggling financially and, due to stress, had an argument with his wife.
As he went for a drive, he encountered a box in the road.
Despite his efforts, it was impossible for him to avoid it and was only left with the option of driving over it.
To his luck and surprise, it was empty, but the situation could have been fatal.
He realized that he needed to return home and apologize to his wife before a catastrophe could happen.
This event helped Stuart create the main character for the film, as he wanted a protagonist who would learn a lesson in the worst possible situation and become a better, but not a different, person.
当時のアクション映画の多くは、男性的なエネルギーに溢れる筋肉質の男性を主役に据えており、これはまさに『ダイ・ハード』の監督が望んでいたことだったが、主役は主要俳優全員に断られた。

Many action films of the time starred muscular men overflowing with masculine energy, and this was exactly what the director of Die Hard wanted, but the leading role was refused by all of the major actors.
Eventually, it was offered to Bruce Willis, who at the time was mainly a TV actor.
Willis was paid a hefty salary of $5 million, comparable to some of the most successful actors of the time.
Some say that due to the role being declined by so many actors, they were desperate, which led to such a high salary being offered.

All worries about the film's success were put aside after the film debuted.
Although it never took the number one spot, it was always in the top five of the highest-grossing films for 10 weeks straight.
Die Hard would go on to be considered one of the greatest action films ever created.
It was selected by the United States Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.".

Over the years, due to the Christmas Eve setting, Die Hard would be considered an alternative Christmas movie.
Many people would enjoy watching it among more traditional Christmas movies.
However, there are some people who will argue against it being a Christmas film, as the only thing Christmas-related is the setting.
Whatever the case, it's a fun movie to enjoy in between all the other traditional Christmas films.
正直に言うと、ダイ・ハードを最初から最後まで見たことがないと思います。
映画のクリップをあちこちで見て楽しんでいましたが、最後まで見る機会がありませんでした。
ダイ・ハードの一番の思い出は、実はビデオゲームです。
子供の頃、かなり人気があったアーケードゲームで遊ぶのが大好きでした。
クリスマスが近づくにつれて、ダイ・ハードを楽しみたいと思っています。

To be honest, I don't think I've seen Die Hard from start to finish.
I've always caught clips of the movie here and there and enjoyed what I watched, but never had an opportunity to watch it all the way through.
My best memory of Die Hard actually comes in the form of the video game.
I loved playing the arcade game that seemed to be quite popular when I was a kid.
I hope to enjoy watching Die Hard in the lead-up to Christmas.
