With so many films available at our fingertips these days, it can be overwhelming to choose what to watch.
In this situation, I like to go with films that are proven classics.
Allow me tell you about one that I just watched.
Let's discuss the intense isolation of The Shining!
『シャイニング』は1980年5月23日に公開された心理ホラー映画です。
監督はスタンリー・キューブリック、共同脚本は小説家のダイアン・ジョンソンです。
この映画はスティーブン・キングの同名小説の映画化ですが、映画と小説にはさまざまな違いがあります。

The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film released on May 23rd.
It was directed by Stanley Kubrick and co-written by Diane Johnson, a novelist.
The film is an adaptation of Stephen King's novel by the same name, although the film and novel have various differences throughout.
Upon the release of the film, Stephen King was vocal about his disappointment and dislike for the film adaptation.
Despite fierce competition during the release weekend, The Shining managed to perform well and grossed $47 million on a budget of $19 million.
ストーリーは、オーバールック ホテルの毎年の休館期間中、冬の間、ホテルの管理人になるという仕事を引き受けたジャックという作家を描いています。
ジャックは、冬の間ずっと、妻と息子とともにホテルの中に閉じ込められます。

The plot follows a writer named Jack who is accepting a job to become the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel during the winter for it's annual closure.
Jack will be alone and stuck inside the hotel with his wife and son for the entire winter season.
His plan was to use this isolation as a chance to work on his novel, but he becomes increasingly frustrated due to writer's block.
Danny, Jack's young son, has a supernatural power to see premonitions and begins to encounter many strange scenes.
One incident leads Danny to room 237, which results in Danny becoming injured.

Jack's wife, Wendy, notices that Jack's mental state has begun to deteriorate when she discovers piles of papers all written with the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.".
Wendy is forced to defend herself from Jack as he begins a murderous rampage through the hotel stalking his wife and son with an ax.
The two eventually escape Jack's murderous assault and flee to safety, leaving Jack standard outside the hotel to freeze to death.

Kubrick, being a success and well established director, had an uncompromised vision for the film.
Before making The Shining, his previous film, Barry Lyndon, was a technical success but panned by critics.
His goal was to make a movie that would be both a technical marvel and a success for the general public.
Kubrick read dozens upon dozens of horror novels, often disappointed and flinging them into a rejection pile until finally landing on Stephen King's The Shining.
撮影が終わると、キューブリック監督のビジョンに対する揺るぎないこだわりが感じられた。俳優たちは何度も同じシーンを撮影しなければならず、疲れ果てて乱れた格好になってしまうことが多かった。

Once filming commended, Kubrick's unwavering commitment towards his vision could be felt, often time at the expense of the actors who would be required to film the same scene dozens of times, leading to them becoming worn out and disheveled.
It was reported that Shelley Duvall, the actor who played Wendy, had the most difficult time adapting to this method of filming.
On the opposite side, Kubrick took every precaution to protect the child actor who played Danny from learning that he was acting in a horror movie.

As stated earlier, The Shining was a box office success, but at the time of release was often panned by critics for not resembling a traditional horror movie.
This sentiment would shift overtime as The Shining became known as one of the best horror films of all time.
It was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2018.
5年ほど前にブルーレイで『シャイニング』を購入しましたが、観たのはつい先月になってからです。
ジャックの顔が壁から覗くなど、この映画について基本的な知識はありましたが、それ以外はあまり知りませんでした。
映画を観ているうちに、どんどん夢中になっていきました。
カメラアングル、セットデザイン、そして全体的な設定に魅了されました。
私は血や残酷さのある伝統的なホラー映画は好きではないので、『シャイニング』の心理的な恐怖は私にぴったりでした。
今は、キューブリックの他の映画を観て、彼がなぜ天才監督になったのかを知りたいと思っています。
I purchased The Shining on Blu-ray about 5 years ago, but only just watched it last month.
I had some basic knowledge about the film, like Jack's face peeking through the wall, but not too much else.
As I watched the film, I felt myself becoming so engrossed in it.
The camera angles, the set design, and the overall premise had captivated me.
I don't like traditional horror films with blood and gore, so The Shining's psychological horror was a good fit for me.
Now, I'm eager to explore Kubrick's other films and discover what made him a genius director.
