Let's dig up the graves of Halloween horrors and see what we can uncover this year.
I will start off strong with a horror movie from Japan.
However, I have a feeling many of you may not have heard of this film.
Let me tell you the story of "House."
『ハウス』は、大林宣彦監督・製作による1977年のホラー映画です。
東宝スタジオは「ジョーズ」のようなホラー映画を作りたいと考え、大林にそのアイデアを持ちかけました。
大林はその依頼を引き受け、脚本を書き始めました。
残念ながら、東宝スタジオにはこの映画の製作を希望する人がおらず、制作は棚上げされていました。
大林の努力により、この映画はついにチャンスを与えられ、監督として指揮を執ることになりました。
批評家からは失敗作と評されましたが、興行的には成功し、カルト的なファンを獲得しました。
House is a 1977 horror film directed and produced by Nobuhiko Obayashi.
Toho Studios wanted to make a horror film in the vein of Jaws and approached Obayashi about the idea.
Obayashi accepted the assignment and began to write a script.
Unfortunately, nobody at Toho Studios wanted to produce the film, and it sat on the back burner.
Through Obayashi's pursuit, the film was finally given a chance, with him taking the helm as director.
Despite being a critical failure, the movie became a box-office success and garnered a cult following.
『ハウス』はホラー映画だが、その一部の要素があまりにも奇抜で幻想的であるため、コメディーに近いとよく言われる。
これは、大林監督が10代前半の娘が提案したアイデアを多く取り入れたためだ。
大林監督は、大人は「自分が理解できるものしか考えない...すべてが退屈な人間レベルにとどまる」のに対し、「子供は説明できないものを思いつく」と感じていた。
House is a horror movie, but due to how outlandish and fantastical some of it's elements are, some people often say, or border on comedy.
This is due to Obayashi using many ideas that his preteen daughter had suggested.
Obayashi felt that adults "only think about things they understand... everything stays on that boring human level," while "children can come up with things that can't be explained.".
『ハウス』に与えたもう一つの影響は、広島と長崎の原爆投下の影響です。
広島生まれの大林監督は原爆投下により友人を全員失いました。
これが、第二次世界大戦で亡くなった恋人の帰還を待つ女性の物語のメインプロットを形作るのに貢献しました。
彼女の喪失に対する怒りと悲しみが、物語の展開の原動力となっています。
Another influence on "House" was the effects of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings.
Obayashi, having been born in Hiroshima, lost all of his friends due to the bombing.
This helped shape the main plot of the story of a woman waiting for her deceased lover to return from World War II.
The anger and sadness from her loss are the main driving points for the story's development.
大林監督は、若い観客が共感できるサウンドを映画に求めました。
これを実現するために、大林監督はミッキー・ヨシノと彼のバンド、ゴデイゴに協力を求めました。
サウンドトラックは映画が完成する前に完成し、リリースされました。
Obayashi wanted the film to have a sound that young viewers could identify with.
To accomplish this, Obayashi sought the help of Mickie Yoshino and his band Godeigo.
The soundtrack was completed and released prior to the film being finished.

Although Toho Studios wasn't confident in the project, the film found success with young audiences.
Prior to release, Obayashi created a short film titled Emotion that became popular around Japanese universities.
This gave Obayashi a grassroots way to promote House leading up to its release.

当初はDVDでリリースされましたが、徐々に人気が高まり、2009年にはニューヨーク・アジアン・フィルム・フェスティバルで上映され、2回の上映で完売となりました。

After over 30 years from its release, the film finally made its way to America.
It was originally released on DVD but slowly grew in popularity where it was screened in 2009 at the New York Asian Film Festival to two sold-out showings.
In 2010, the film was remastered and shown in theaters across the United States.
Finally, the film was released under the Criterion Collection in 2010 alongside Obayashi's short film, Emotion.
