The story follows Sam Wheat (Swayze) who is a banker in New York.
While out with his girlfriend, Molly Jensen (Moore), they are attacked by a mugger and Sam is killed.
Sam realizes he has become a ghost and instead of entering heaven decides to stay on Earth to save Molly from danger.
As a ghost, Sam can't interact with people, but he finds a psychic medium, Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg), whom he can interact with.
Sam, along with Oda Mae must work together to find the person who murdered him and stop them from murdering Molly as well.
