前回は、浜松にピザハットの新しい建物ができたという話をしました。
今回はドミノ・ピザについてお話します！
We talked about the new Pizza Hut buildings popping up in Hamamatsu last time.
This time let's talk about Domino's Pizza!
ドミノ・ピザの起源は1960年まで遡ります。
ミシガン州イプシランティにあるドミニックスという名前の地元のピザレストランとして始まりました。
トムとジェームス モナハンはオーナーからレストランを総額 1400 ドルで購入し、一緒に経営を始めました。

Domino's Pizza can trace its origins back to 1960.
It started out as a local pizza restaurant in Ypsilanti, Michigan named DomiNick's.
Tom and James Monaghan purchased the restaurant from the owner for a total of $1400 and began to run the business together.
James, not wanting to quit his full-time job as a postman, sold his half of the restaurant to his brother for ownership of the store's Volkswagen Beetle.

By 1965, Tom owned two additional pizza restaurants.
He wanted to create uniformity between them and feature the same name, however, the former owner of DomiNick's forbade him from using the name.
An employee at the time suggested changing the name to Domino's and Tom loved it!
The three restaurants were officially renamed Domino's Pizza, Inc. in 1965.
The logo with the three dots was created to symbolize one of each restaurant.
A new dot would be added for each new restaurant, but this idea quickly faded as the company experienced rapid growth.
By 1978 the company had 200 stores in operation.

As mentioned last time, Domino's Pizza was part of the big three pizza restaurants in America during the 80s and 90s.
Pizza Hut's secret weapon was the stuffed crust pizza, but Domino's also had its own trump card.
Domino's offered the fastest pizza delivery of the three.
They guaranteed that your pizza would be delivered within 30 minutes or it would be free.

Unfortunately, their 30-minute guarantee began to hurt the company.
In 1992 a lawsuit was settled between Domino's and a family from Indiana.
One of the family members was killed by a speeding Domino's driver resulting in a payout of $2.8 million.
Again in 1993, a woman was injured by a Domino's driver who ran a red light.
A court awarded her $80 million and she accepted a $15 million payout.
After these incidents, Domino's retracted their guarantee due to public perception of reckless driving but still did their best to deliver pizza within 30 minutes.

Finally, in the late 80s, Domino's introduced a mascot called The Noid.
He was a man wearing a skin-tight suit with rabbit-like ears.
His mission was to stop Domino's from delivering their pizza within 30 minutes.
The character was featured in many commercials at this time, and even has a connection to Japan!
