私の場合、好きな動物は時とともに変わります。
以前はカピバラに夢中でした。
しかし、カピバラの人気が急上昇し始めたとき、興味を失い始めたことに気づきました。
そこで、今度は新しい動物がその座を奪いに来ました。
オオアリクイについてお話ししましょう！
Do you have a favorite animal?
For me, my favorite animal changes over time.
Previously, I was crazy about capybaras.
However, I've noticed that when capybaras began to boom in popularity I began to lose interest.
So now a new animal has arisen to take the spot.
Let me tell you about the giant anteater!
アリクイはあなたや私と同じ哺乳類です。そして私と同じように、ナマケモノと近縁です。しかし、だまされてはいけません。アリクイは、その気になれば時速 30 マイルで走ることができます。私がそんなに速く走っているのを見かけるのは、ズボンの中にアリがいるときだけです。
Anteaters are just like you and me, they are mammals. And like me, they are closely related to sloths. But don’t let that fool you, if an anteater wanted, it could sprint up to 30mph! The only time you’d catch me sprinting that fast is if I had ants in my pants.
アリと言えば、アリクイが何を好むかわかりますか？果物や鳥の卵と答えた方は正解です！しかし、アリクイの好物はアリです！アリクイは人間の約40倍の強力な嗅覚を駆使してアリの巣を見つけます。アリクイは爪で巣を掘り起こし、長くて粘着性のある舌を使って襲撃を開始します。アリクイは1分間に約160回舌を出し入れすることができます！想像できますか？舌の長さは約60cmで、できるだけ多くのアリを集めるように設計されています！
Speaking of ants, can you guess what an anteater likes to eat? If you guessed fruits or bird eggs, you’re right! However, the anteater’s favorite food is ants! An anteater uses its powerful sense of smell, which is about 40 times stronger than humans, to locate ant hives. It will dig up the nest with its claws and begin its raid using its long, sticky tongue. The anteater can flick its tongue in and out about 160 times per minute! Can you imagine? The tongue is about 60cm in length and designed to gather as many ants as possible!
アリクイの設計上の大きな欠点の 1 つは、アリの毒に対する耐性がないことです。もっと抗体が必要なようです。このため、アリクイはアリの攻撃に 1 分程度しか耐えられません。その後、回復しながら別の巣を探しに行きます。1 日のうちに、アリクイは約 200 の巣を襲い、30,000 匹以上のアリを食べることもあります。おいしそう!
One major flaw in the anteater design is that it’s not resistant to the poison of ants. I guess it needs more antibodies. Due to this, an anteater can only sustain its assault for about 1 minute. Afterward, it will leave in search of another nest to raid while recovering. Over a day, an anteater might raid about 200 nests and eat over 30,000 ants! Yummy!
ゴリラのように、アリクイは指の関節で歩きます。これは、長い爪が時間の経過とともに鈍くならないようにするためです。アリクイの爪は驚くほど鋭く強力で、ピューマやジャガーを撃退する能力があります。
Like gorillas, anteaters walk on their knuckles. This is to keep their long claws from dulling over time. Their claws are surprisingly sharp and powerful with the capability of fending off pumas and jaguars.
最後に、アリクイは 1 年に 1 匹の子供を産みます。最初の 3 か月間は母親が背中に子供を乗せて、毛づくろいをしたり保護したりします。子供は自立すると母親の後をついて回り、さらに 7 か月間は母親からサポートを受けます。その後は母親から離れ、自力で生きていきます。野生のアリクイの寿命は約 15 年と予想されますが、飼育下では最長 25 年まで生きることもあります。
Finally, anteaters give birth to one offspring a year. The mother will carry the pup on its back for the first three months, grooming and protecting it. Once the pup is self-sufficient, it will follow the mother around, in which it will still receive support for another 7 months. Afterward, it will leave the mom and begin to survive on its own. An anteater in the wild is expected to live for around 15 years, but in captivity can live for up to 25 years.
アリクイはもっと注目されるべき一流の動物だと私は思います。調べたところ、静岡市にある静岡市立日本平動物園でアリクイが見られるようです。夏休みにぜひ旅行を計画します！皆さんもこの素晴らしい動物に会える機会があるといいですね！
In my opinion, anteaters are a top-tier animal that deserves more attention. From my research, it looks like you can see an anteater at the Shizuoka Municipal Nihondaira Zoo in Shizuoka City. I’ll make sure to plan a trip during the summer vacation! I hope everyone can also find an opportunity to see this amazing animal as well!
