3月 8 日は国際女性デー (IWD) です！
今日は、この祝日の歴史を振り返り、もう少し理解を深めましょう。
In February, we talked about Black History Month and the struggles of African-Americans to be seen as equals in America.
March is also a month when we highlight the struggles and triumphs of a group of people.
March 8th is International Women's Day (IWD)!
Today, let's look at the history of this holiday and understand it a little better.
毎年 3 月 8 日は、世界中で国際女性デーとして祝われます。
この日、私たちは男女平等、生殖に関する権利、女性に対する暴力や虐待に対する女性の苦境を思い起こします。
ヨーロッパや世界中の多くの国で、国際女性デーは公式の祝日と定められています。
Each year, March 8th is celebrated globally as International Women's Day.
On this day, we are reminded of women's plight for gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
In many countries throughout Europe and worldwide, IWD is declared an official holiday.
IWDの起源は、1909年 2月 28日のニューヨーク市にまで遡ります。
この日は「女性の日」と呼ばれ、アメリカ社会党の活動家テレサ・マルキールが主催しました。
The origins of IWD can be traced back to New York City on February 28th, 1909.
This day was called "Women's Day" and was organized by the Socialist Party of America by activist Theresa Malkiel.

As word spread, more women around the world began to organize and petition for an annual Women's Day.
By March 1911, in Austria-Hungary, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, over 300 demonstrations were held and this became the first International Women's Day.
The original causes were the right to vote and to hold public office, and the abolition of employment sex discrimination.
Although IWD still had no official date, demonstrations were held around the end of February and start of March.
It wasn't until Vladimir Lenin declared March 8th as IWD in 1922 to honor women's role in the 1917 Russian Revolution that an official date was recognized globally.

From the 1920s to the 1960s IWD began to spread across the world.
Women from countries like Australia, America, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, and Afghanistan too the charge to end women's suffrage and gender equality.
By the late 1960s, IWD began to shift, as up until now it was considered a communist holiday.
A second wave of feminism began to spread throughout left-leaning political parties and labor organizations, calling for equal pay, equal economic opportunity, equal legal rights, reproductive rights, subsidized child care, and the prevention of violence against women.
The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in 1975, which had been proclaimed the International Women's Year.
Since then, IWD has seen widespread acceptance and has made great strides for women all around the world.
日本は歴史的に男性優位の社会でしたが、女性の扱い方には大きな変化がありました。
残念ながら、世界中で女性は未だに男性と同等に扱われていませんが、少しずつ近づいていると感じています。
日本の首相が女性になる日が来るといいですね。
日本の歴史は私の得意分野ではないので間違っているかもしれませんが、卑弥呼が女王だった頃、日本は平和ではなかったのでしょうか？
Although Japan has historically been a male-dominated society, there have been big shifts in how women are treated.
Unfortunately, all throughout the world, women are still not treated as equals to men, but I feel things are slowly inching closer together.
I would love to see the day when the prime minister of Japan is a female.
I may be wrong as Japanese history is not my strong point, but didn't Japan see peace when Himiko was the queen?
