When you think of Christmas traditions, what comes to mind?
Most people might think of caroling, gift giving, or Elf on the Shelf.
However, did you know there is a lesser-known tradition?
It involves a pickle!
Let me tell you about the Christmas pickle!

Decorating the Christmas tree is one of the most widely known Christmas traditions.
Over the years, there have been all kinds of decorations.
The most common being ornaments, usually in the shape of balls.
However, around the 1890s, a new ornament began to gain popularity in America, it was a pickle!

Many people believe the tradition came from Germany, but evidence suggest that this may not be entirely true.
Around 1890, American company, Woolworths, began to import glass Christmas ornaments from Germany.
Not long after, glass vegetables were also being imported from France, and it was there that the Christmas pickle tradition began to take shape.
Although not directly from Germany, many people still believed it was the origin.

So, what exactly is the tradition behind the Christmas pickle?
Amongst the other ordinary Christmas decorations, a special Christmas pickle is hidden within the Christmas tree.
Due to it's green color, it tends to blend in quite easily.
On Christmas Day, the first person to find the Christmas pickle is said to get a special gift from Santa or be blessed with a year of good fortune!
A festival was held in Michigan celebrating the Christmas pickle from 1992 until 2005 and once more in 2021.

I will be the first to admit, this is a rather obscure tradition.
I lived in America for 29 years and I had never heard of the Christmas pickle.
It may seem strange at first, I think it sounds rather fun!
