Let's start our Christmas discussion off by talking about the most popular Christmas character, Santa Claus!

Santa is a traditional Christmas figure dating back hundreds of years.
Each part of the world has a different version of Santa with different variations on his lore.

For example, when I ask Japanese kids "Where is Santa from?" I often hear answers like "Finland" or "Sweden".
I was surprised when I first heard this, but in America, everyone believes Santa lives in the North Pole.

In fact, Santa Claus has many different names in America as well.
He can commonly be referred to as Old Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, or simply Santa.

He accomplishes this through his magical sleigh guided by his reindeer.
He often enters homes through their chimney, if one is available.
Children will leave a treat for Santa, which traditionally consists of milk and cookies.

Santa is always portrayed as a jolly, portly, old man, with a big white beard and dressed in red.

Although Christmas is traditionally a Christian holiday, Santa has transcended those boundaries and is now recognized and beloved around the world.
