This next one is a more current song from 2018.
It shows some of the darker aspects of American culture.

In 2018 Donald Glover, known by his stage name Childish Gambino, released a song called "This is America".
This wasn't the usual song praising America for being a great place to live, but rather focusing on issues facing black people in America.
Some of the focal points are prejudice, racial violence, law enforcement, and gun violence.
Despite the heavy message the song resonated with many Americans and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Outside the United States, it had also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
At the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, the song won 4 categories for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance, and Best Music Video.

We can't talk about this song without also talking about the shocking music video that accompanies it.
When the video was released it created a large commotion in the United States.
The video was directed by a Japanese-American named Hiro Murai.
Hiro Murai is the son of Japanese music performer Kunihiko Murai.

Gambino can be seen doing dances derived from Africa as well as striking poses similar to those of Jim Crow.
While the music is jovial we can hear and see a choir singing in the background only to be gunned down by Gambino when things become violent.
The image is shocking and leaves a large impact on the watcher.
Entire analysis videos have been made looking into each detail that went into the video's creation.

I know many will watch this video and have a negative impression of the United States.
America is far from a perfect country.
Within America, many problems might seem strange and unfamiliar, especially from a Japanese perspective.
However, despite these problems, I still believe America is a wonderful country.
The truth is that every country has problems, but in America, we are free to openly talk about and criticize what is going on so that we may strive for change.
