クリスマスの飾り付けについて考えるとき、最初に思い浮かぶものは何ですか?
リースやクリスマスツリーというと思いますが、キャンディケインを思い浮かべる人も多いと思います！
クリスマスといえばペパーミント風味の赤白スティック！

When you think of Christmas decorations what are some of the first things that come to mind?
I'm sure you'll say a wreath or Christmas tree, but I think many people will also think of candy canes!
These peppermint-flavored red and white sticks are synonymous with Christmas!
But where did they come from?
Let's check out the history of candy canes!

Candy canes have become an iconic staple of the Christmas holidays.
Their crooked shape let me perfectly sit on a Christmas tree and serve as an edible decoration.

As with most things, it's hard to know their exact origin.
Historians have found mention of a "stick candy" in an 1837 record from a candy competition in Boston, Massachusetts.
Another book from 1844 has a recipe for peppermint candy sticks with colored stripes.
In 1866 the word "candy cane" appeared for the first time in a short story, but with no mention of color or flavor.
Finally, in 1874 and 1882 two separate magazines mentioned candy canes alongside Christmas.

However, many believe the true history of candy canes dates much further back than the 1800s.
One popular belief is that in 1670 in Cologne, Germany, the choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral wanted a way to keep the children quiet during the Christmas Eve Living Crèche nativity scene.
The choirmaster asked a local candy maker to make some sugar sticks for the children.
However, to justify the thought of giving candy to children during a holy ritual he asked that a crook be added so the shape could represent that of the shepherds who visited the infant Jesus.
He further added that the white of the candy cane would represent the sinless life of Jesus.
そうは言っても、私はキャンディケインがあまり好きではありません。

With all that said, I really don't like candy canes.
Even as a kid, I never wanted to eat them.
I think they look nice as decorations though and I'm happy to see them during Christmas time!
