ケンタウロスという生き物をご存知ですか？
下半身は馬、上半身は人間です。
この生き物は射手座のシンボルです。
この神話上の生き物にはどんな物語があるのでしょうか？
今日は、最も有名なケンタウロス、カイロンを見てみましょう。
Are you familiar with a creature called a centaur?
Its lower half is that of a horse while the upper half is human.
This creature is the symbol of the zodiac sign of Sagittarius.
What is the story of this mythical creature?
Today, let's look at the most famous centaur, Chiron.
ケンタウロスは、野性的で、好色で、過度の酒飲みや大騒ぎをする人、酔うと暴力的で、一般に教養のない非行者として悪名が高かった。
ギリシャ神話では野生動物と考えられていました。
ただし、カイロンは例外でした。
Centaurs were notorious for being wild, lusty, overly indulgent drinkers and carousers, violent when intoxicated, and generally uncultured delinquents.
They were considered wild animals in Greek mythology.
However, Chiron was an exception to this.
カイロンは、タイタンクロノスが馬の姿をとり、ニンフのフィリュラを妊娠させたときに生まれました。
出産後、フィリラは子供に嫌気がさし、子供を捨てました。
孤児で孤独だったクリオンは、太陽の神アポロンによって発見されました。
Chiron was born from the Titan Chronus when he had taken the form of a horse and impregnated the nymph Philyra.
After giving birth, Philyra was disgusted with her child and abandoned him.
Orphaned and alone, Chrion was found by the Apollo, god of the Sun.
アポロンはケイロンを指導したいと考え、彼を弟子として迎え入れました。
カイロンが音楽、竪琴、弓術、医学、予言の芸術を学んだのはこの時期でした。

Apollo wanted to mentor Chiron and took him as his disciple.
It was during this time that Chiron learned the art of music, lyre, archery, medicine, and prophecy.
Apollo's twin sister, Artemis, god of the hunt, had also taken a liking to Chiron and trained him in archery and hunting.
Due to the Apollo and Artemis' influence Chrion had become known for his uniquely peaceful character, kindness, and intelligence.

Chiron's skills as an archer, an oracle, a healer, and an astrologer have garnered him great reverence.
He became a well-known teacher and had many pupils.
Amongst them includes Hercules and Jason of the Argonauts, whom we discussed in one of our original blog posts. (

Perhaps his most famous pupil would be the hero of the Trojan War, Achilles.
アキレウスの父ペレウスは、アキレスが幼い頃にケイロンを託した。
アキレスは生まれたときはリギュロンと名付けられましたが、カイロンが彼にアキレスという名前を与え、それ以来彼はその名前で知られるようになりました。

Peleus, Achilles' father, entrusted him with Chiron when he was young.
Achilles was named Ligyron at birth, but Chiron gifted him the name Achilles, which he henceforth became known as.
After learning medicine, archery, and many other things from Chiron, Achilles would go on to fight in the Trojan War.
Achilles wielded armor created by the god Hephaestus along with a strong shield.
His weapon of choice was a legendary spear called the Pelian Spear, which was gifted to him by Chiron.
カイロンの死は彼の弟子ヘラクレスの手によってもたらされました。
その経緯については諸説ありますが、いずれもヒドラの毒を塗った矢が刺さったというものです。
タイタンの息子であるケイローンは不滅ですが、高貴な行為として、人間に火を与えた神プロメテウスの自由と引き換えに彼の不死性を引き換えにゼウスと契約が結ばれました。
不死性を失い、毒を止めることができなかったカイロンは命を落としました。
ゼウスの異母兄弟である彼は、不死性を放棄したケイローンを憐れみ、ケンタウルス座として讃えられる星の中に入れました。

Chiron's death came at the hands of his pupil Hercules.
There are a few different accounts of how it happened, but they all include being pierced by an arrow coated in hydra poison.
Chiron, being the son of a Titan is immortal, but in a noble deed, a deal was struck with Zeus which traded his immortality for the freedom of Prometheus, the god who gave fire to humans.
Losing his immortality and not being able to stop the poison, Chiron lost his life.
Being Zeus's half-brother, he took pity on Chiron for giving up his immortality and placed him among the stars to be honored as the constellation Centaurus.
This is how we have the zodiac sign of Sagittarius!
