前回は料理アニメ『中華一番！』についてお話しました。
今日は料理漫画を紹介したいと思います。
あまり人気はなかったと思いますが、英語でも出版されていました。
鉄鍋ジャンについて聞いたことがありますか？
Previously we talked about the cooking anime, Chūka Ichiban!
Today, I want to introduce a cooking manga.
I don't think it was very popular, but it was published in English.
Have you ever heard of Iron Wok Jan?
西条真二作・絵の『鉄鍋のジャン』は、1995年6月から2000年3月まで『週刊少年チャンピオン』に連載された。
好評だったので続編も作られることになり、鉄鍋のジャン！ 『R:頂上作戦』は秋田書店より2006年11月から2010年12月まで刊行された。
Written and illustrated by Shinji Saijyo Iron Wok Jan was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Champion from June, 1995 to March, 2000.
It was popular enough for a follow-up to be made and thus Iron Wok Jan! R: The Summit Operations was published by Akita Shoten from November, 2006 to December, 2010.
物語は、中華料理の達人である海一郎の孫であるジャンの物語です。
海一郎はジャンを中華料理の達人に育てるために訓練するが、その方法は非常に厳しく厳しいものであった。
加齢で味覚が鈍くなった海一郎は、ジャンを五番町家に送り出し、銀座の五番町店で働くことになる。
開一郎はその直後に焼身自殺した。
The story follows Jan, who is the grandson of Kaiichiro, the master of Chinese cuisine.
Kaiichiro trains Jan to become a master of Chinese cooking, but does so in a very harsh and strict way.
When Kaiichiro looses his sense of taste due to age, he sends Jan off to the Gobanchou family where he will work in the Gobanchou restaurant in Ginza.
Kaiichiro commits suicide through immolation soon after.
ジャンは多くのシェフから挑戦を受けますが、祖父から中華料理マスターの称号を引き継ぐ価値があることをすぐに証明します。
ジャンはその育ちのせいで非常に孤立しているが、五番町家の娘を含む他の従業員たちと徐々に友情を育んでいく。
Jan is challenged by many chefs, but he quickly proves that he is worth of taking the mantle of Master of Chinese Cuisine from his grandfather.
Due to his upbringing Jan is very standoffish, but slowly forms a friendship with the other workers, including the daughter of the Gobanchou family.
この漫画は非常にユニークな方法で描かれており、力強い表情と激しいアクションが描かれています。
いつも読んでいてワクワクするし、ジャンが実際どれくらい強いのか見てみたくなった。
The manga is illustrated in a very unique way, showcasing strong facial expressions and intense action.
It's always exciting to read, and I found myself wanting to see how much stronger Jan really is.
この漫画は 2002 年 12 月から 2007 年 12 月まで英語で出版されました。
最初の巻は内容も知らずに近所の本屋で買ったのを覚えています。
表紙の絵に興奮して、これまで料理漫画を読んだことがなかった私。
それがどれほど強烈でエキサイティングなものであるかに驚きました。
このシリーズはまだ読み終えていませんが、いつかもう一度読みたいと思っています。
The manga was published in English from December, 2002 to December, 2007.
I remember buying the first volume at my local bookstore not knowing what it was.
The cover art excited me and I had never read a cooking manga before.
I was surprised by just how intense and exciting it could be.
Although I never finished the series, I hope to read it again, someday.
最後に、3 番目のフォローアップ シリーズが 2015 年から日本で出版され、7 巻続きました。
この漫画では麻雀が物語の主要な部分として紹介されました。
Finally, a third follow-up series was published in Japan from 2015 and lasted 7 volumes.
This iteration of the manga introduced mahjong as a main part of the story.
