He was prolific from the early 80s and into the 2000s, but slowly stopped appearing in films.
Some of his most iconic film appearances were in "Coming to America" and "Beverly Hills Cop".
Of course, he's also fondly remembered for being the voice of Mushu from Disney's Mulan, and Donkey from DreamWorks' Shrek.

Today, I want to tell you the story of how Eddie Murphy saved Gumby!

As we discussed before, the original Gumby television program ran from 1957 until 1969.
After the show had ended, many people began to forget about Gumby.
A special Gumby screening event was held with a Q&A session by Arte Cloke, the Gumby creator.
The event was a success and among the attendance were writers from a comedy TV program.
A few weeks later, Eddie Murphy changed the course of Gumby's future.

Before his movie career skyrocketed, Eddie Murphy appeared on the long-running sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, or SNL for short.
Eddie had portrayed other popular children's show characters before this, but his portrayal of Gumby is what set them apart.
Gumby is, of course, a kind, loving, cheerful character, however, Eddie had transformed him into a rude, impatient washed-up movie star.
On March 27, 1982, Eddie delivered his now iconic line "I'm Gumby, dammit!".
It immediately became one of those shows most iconic moments and not only helped push Eddie Murphy into further stardom but also singlehandedly led to the revival of the Gumby franchise.
Eddie would continue to appear on SNL as Gumby a few more times before breaking out into Movies.

On December 21st, 2019, Eddie Murphy made a special appearance on SNL, bringing the Gumby character back once again.
