It's true!!
Actually, it was part of the original 1989 Mario cartoon.
毎週金曜日、マリオアニメはゼルダ ゲームのキャラクターをフィーチャーした特別エピソードを放送していました。

Every Friday, the Mario cartoon would air a special episode that featured characters from the Zelda game!
The game was based on The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link!

The show focuses on both Zelda and Link as they defend Hyrule kingdom from Ganon, who possesses the Triforce of Power.
Zelda is portrayed as a headstrong, self-sufficient princess while Link is a moaning, self-centered teenager who repeatedly fails to convince Zelda that he deserves a kiss for his heroic deeds.
The cartoon has spawned many internet jokes, or memes, centered around Link and his catchphrase "Well, excuse me, Princess!"

The writers of the show were given a significant amount of freedom with little involvement from Nintendo.
Nintendo provided character descriptions and designs, but other than that didn't contribute to the series.
The creators were not gamers and drew most of their inspiration from the series' story and not gameplay.
They also introduced an original character, a small fairy named Spryte.
Many of the writers took inspiration from their own tabletop roleplaying game adventures they created in Dungeons & Dragons.
Interestingly enough, this also marks the first instance that Link was given a voice.
