時々、ミュージシャンが現れて世界を席巻します。
エルビス。ビートルズ。マドンナ。
もちろん他にもたくさんいますが、今日はその中の一人についてお話ししたいと思います。
紹介の必要のない人です。
デビッド・ボウイと彼の曲「ブラックスター」についてお話ししましょう。

Every so often a musician will come along and take the world by storm.
Elvis. The Beatles. Madonna.
Of course there are many others, and today I want to talk about one of them.
A man who needs no introduction.
Let's talk about David Bowie and his song Blackstar.



ブラックスターは、2015年11月19日にリリースされたボウイの26枚目かつ最後のスタジオアルバムからのリードシングルです。
リリース時にアメリカのビルボードホット100で最高78位を記録しました。
当時、この曲はビルボードホット100で9分57秒と最も長い曲でした。
この曲は最優秀ロックソングと最優秀ロックパフォーマンスの2つのグラミー賞を受賞しました。

Blackstar is the lead single from Bowie's 26th and final studio album released on November 19th, 2015.
Upon release it peaked at number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 in America.
At the time, the song was the longest, at 9 minutes and 57 seconds, to place in the Billboard Hot 100.
It went on to receive two Grammy awards for best rock song and best rock performance.

ブラックスターは一言では説明できない曲です。
音楽スタイルは前衛的なアプローチで多方面に渡っています。
ミュージック ビデオも同様にワイルドです。
ミュージック ビデオと呼ぶだけでは不十分で、10 分間の短編映画に近いです。

Blackstar is a song that can't be described in one word.
The musical style goes in many directions taking an avant-garde approach.
The music video is just as wild as well.
Calling it a music video doesn't properly describe it, as it's more of a 10 minute short film.

この映画は、ボウイの直接の協力を得て、ヨハン・レンクが監督を務めた。
尻尾のある女性が宇宙飛行士の遺体を発見する物語。
女性は宇宙飛行士の頭蓋骨を奇妙な町に持ち帰り、そこで神聖な儀式が始まる。

The film was directed by Johan Renck with direct input from Bowie.
It follows a woman with a tail who discovers the remains of an astronaut.
The woman takes the astronaut's skull back to a strange town where a sacred ceremony begins.

はい、奇妙に聞こえるかもしれませんが、これはデヴィッド・ボウイの話でもあるのです。

Yes, it sounds weird, but this is also David Bowie we are talking about.

この曲とビデオは、批評家とファンの両方から広く賞賛された。
ブラックスターのアルバムを制作している間、ボウイは自分に残された時間があまりないことに気付いていたに違いなく、この作品に残されたすべてを注ぎ込みたいと思っていた。
アルバムのリリースから2日後、偶然にも彼の誕生日に、彼は肝臓癌で亡くなった。
この曲には、エルヴィスの曲「ブラックスター」から引用した不吉な歌詞があり、「男は自分の黒い星を見ると、自分の時が来たとわかる...」と書かれている。

The song and video received widespread praise by both critics and fans alike.
During the making of the Blackstar album Bowie must of been aware that he didn't have much time left to live and wanted to put everything he had left into this creation.
Two days after the release of the album and coincidentally his birthday, he passed away due to liver cancer.
The song contains an ominous lyrics which was taken from the Elvis song titled "Black Star" which reads "When a man sees his black star, he knows his time...has come."

実を言うと、私はデヴィッド・ボウイとその音楽についてほとんど何も知りません。
彼の派手な性格は私にはまったく響かず、彼の過去の音楽を聴く必要性を感じたこともありません。
しかし、初めてブラックスターを聴いたとき、すぐに私の興味を引かれました。
実際、私がこの曲を初めて聴いたのは2016年半ば頃でした。
私はちょうど日本に引っ越したばかりで、ラジオをつけて社用車を運転していました。
初めて外国にいたとき、夜運転しながらこの曲を聴きました。
その雰囲気は私に大きな印象を与えるのにちょうどよかったです。
デヴィッド・ボウイの最後の傑作を楽しむことができてうれしいです。

Truth be told, I know very little about David Bowie and his music.
His flamboyant nature never resonated with me and I never felt compelled to listen to his back catalogue of music.
However, when I first heard Blackstar it immediately caught my attention.
In fact, it wasn't until about mid 2016 that I first heard the song.
I had just moved to Japan and was driving in my company car with the radio on.
Driving at night, listening to this song, while being in a foreign country for the first time.
The atmosphere was just right for it to make a big impression on me.
I'm glad I could enjoy David Bowies final masterpiece.
